Background Information:
12!Years Old

The earliest accounts of Asahina Satoru’s life starts with his early friendship with Saki and Maria back when they started at Heavenly Host Elementary School. Later it can be assumed that they dragged Shun into their circle of friends and they’ve been together ever since. But as they began to mature the children one after another would develop their powers and be expected to join the unified class. Satoru gains his powers before Saki, and seemed to have adopted the role of team leader for Team 1. Before his joining of the unified class though he like all children his age undergo the purification ceremony, where they are brainwashed into believing their powers can be taken away and taught that hurting humans will bring them pain, even death.

At the unified class Satoru shows great promise, overshadowed only by his best friend Shun. All is fun and games for the most part, except for two instances that disturb the peace. One incident involves Reiko, a member of Team 1 and someone who Satoru tended to bully because of her inability with her Power. Another point was during a game where a boy cheated. Both individuals would shortly disappear.

Other than this nothing disturbs the peace until Team 1 goes camping for a school project of their choice. Here Satoru tells his team about the rumors of balloon dogs and the demon Minoshiro. This catches the interest of Shun who suggests they go out and find them. So the next day they head out. It would end up being Satoru who pushes them to break the rules and cross the sacred barrier, something that children were banned from doing, or if had too must have an adult with them. There they really do find a demon minoshiro, but it turns out not to be a regular animal at all, but a living database which they threaten information out of, spurred on by curiosity. They end up regretting this action soon after, when they learn the horrors of what lies in the human past and what eventually became their settlement. Telekinetics, or PK users developed naturally around the 20th century and grew in population at a rapid pace until they registered as .2 of the human population. With their birth they brought about destruction as their fellow humans used them or they themselves would abuse their power, taking out entire civilizations and driving the entire world into war.

The war took out most of the world, and in Asia the people separated into four factions. The hunter gatherers who were regular humans, those that continued to live by technology who were PK users, Bandits who were PK users, and the Slave Dynasties where a PK user would rule over a nation of normal humans. In the end the hunter gatherers, the Slave Dynasties, and the Bandits where wiped out leaving those that where ruled by technology. Using this they strived to create a peace among the human race. They inserted two mechanisms into the human genome, making it so that they wouldn’t want to kill humans, and also so they COULD not kill humans or they will die. They also focused the children on study and practice, using this as well to point out those that could become problems in the future and killing them.

Another thing that was taught to the children to help preserve the peace was a “Society of Love” which was adopted from the Bonobos, a type of monkey who whenever they found themselves faced with stress or conflict would use sexual intimacy to ease them of their worries. Satoru is an individual who tends to take this method of relief often.

And truly needed it for what was to come. Shortly after hearing these words from the demon minoshiro they were caught by a priest of the purification temple and had their powers sealed. As they were being led to safety, they would end up running into an army of invading monster rats who attacked and would kill the priest, leaving the children to fend for themselves. The group of five would split up to run for their lives. Satoru finds Saki hurt and they both end up captured by what they later find out is the Earth Spider Colony. Monster Rats are giant walking, and talking naked mole rats. But in fact they are what happened to the regular humans after they decide they could no longer allow their species to kill one another. This is found out by a much older Satoru. Usually the humans use them as laborers, but leave them for the most part to live their lives in their colonies. Many Monster rats have sworn allegiance to the humans, treating them as gods. However this particular colony was not from around here, and would treat the children as they would any captured individual. Satoru and Saki manage to escape only to run into a monster rat named Squela, but this monster rat was “loyal” and part of a loyal colony known as the Robber Fly Colony. Here, they are both begged to wipe out the Earth Spider Colony.

This is the beginning where Satoru starts to change, and where his normal life starts to turn upside down. Him and his friends where now going to be hunted down and killed by the Ethics committee for breaking the rules and hearing something they shouldn’t have, that was if they weren’t first eaten by the Earth Spiders. All the while he had to act like he was a god so that Squala and the Robber Fly colony didn’t gain doubt in their immense power and risk them trying to revolt in the future. Luckily Saki had tricked Satoru into showing her his Mantra, the words that unlocked his power, and she brainwashed him out of the seal. With this he decides to take the fight to the Earth Spiders, believing wiping them out was the only way to remain safe.

This is when a single 12 year old boy fights an entire army of monsters on his own. To say the least he was never going to last, but he did a good job of it until Kiroumaru and the 20 thousand man army that was the Giant Hornet Colony came and took out the rest. At this time Satoru saves his life after the leader of the Earth Spider’s comes and tries to blow everyone up with the use of balloon dogs. Balloon dogs are mutated animals who explode when angered and have sharp angular weapons for bones. This was how the priest who had sealed their powers originally died. Satoru used the last of his energy to seal the bombs and then proceeds to pass out.

That night he’s awoken by Saki and explains to her that they need to escape, after all the Giant hornets where loyal to humans, and therefore loyal to the ethics committee. Believing that they were likely to be killed by the very creatures who had saved them they ran for it. Yet again they run into Squela who leads them to their canoes and at the same time to the rest of their friends. He then runs and tells the Giant Hornet leader and they take pursuit. Satoru believes this is the end for them, only to find out that at the risk of their own lives, the Giant Hornets decide to help the children instead of kill them.

They return to Kaimisu 66 and it’s reported by Asahina Tomiko, Satoru’s grandmother and the secret leader of the Ethics Committee that they were attained and studied. This is not recalled by any of the children, who we don’t see until they have reached the age of 14 and are back in class.

14!Years Old to Current

The next time we see Asahina Satoru and his friends it’s two years later. Satoru had started dating Aonuma Shun and everything seemed to be great. Seemed to be…but wasn’t. As stated previously, everything changed after that trip. When they had arrived back home after their summer camp adventures they had been captured and watched over like guinea pigs by the ethics committee. Later they would be released and life would go on as usual, at least on the outside. But still they were being watched, the education committee looking for any reason to eradicate the children. But even they were caught off guard as Shun started to change, and change at such a rate there was nothing they could do about it. Satoru never noticed any of this. He was just happy to be with his now boyfriend, and to spend what time he could with his friends. He trained hard and would advance to such a level with his power it grabbed the interest of Shisei Kubaragi, the most powerful PK user in their village and rumored to be able to split the Earth in two.

But soon even that false happiness began to crumble. Shun started to be more distant with Satoru, and Satoru did everything he could to just attempt to hold onto him. It wasn’t enough though, because he hadn’t known the real reason behind why Shun was acting the way he was, why he had fought against dating him originally. And then the next thing he knew Shun was walking away from him, he ran to stop him and Shun tore him to pieces. Not literally, but that would have been more welcomed then those words, spouted at him in such a nonchalant voice, a smile on his face. They broke up… And to spite Shun, Satoru would begin to date the first guy that came scrambling to his side when the word spread.

It was a lie though, a lie like so many others he told. But he was always rather convincing when he wanted to be, and he got what he wanted. Shun and him wouldn’t speak again until independent practice where Shun would suddenly pass out. All their friends gathered around him one last time, worried about his health, but he shrugs them off saying he was fine. That would be the last time Satoru would ever see or hear from the man he loved again. For after that day, he doesn’t come back to school, and disappears altogether.

Saki had run into him though, and gave Satoru and the others a message. To beware of cats and inform them that they had always been being watched, and that they never escaped punishment, it had just been postponed. But that was to be figured really. What worried him more was hearing that Shun had gone off to some secluded bungalow, apparently for medical reasons? It just sounded, wrong. And just as Shun had expected of Satoru, he instantly began searching for him. Not with the idea of getting back together, but just because he cared about him, and he was worried. Satoru and Saki would team up to go investigate Pinewind where Shun lived, while Mamoru and Maria would ask the other students from the same village about the boy.

The first thing that obstructed their way was a guard boat and a protective barrier encompassing the entire village. To avoid the guard boat they try instead to take the forest, and find an easier time with this path. Only having to avoid the monster rats that guarded around the area and pass over the barrier. That was strange, why so much protection, what had happened? These thoughts weighed on their hearts as they continued forward until suddenly they were stopped by a sacred barrier. This was insane, never before had they heard of a case where the priests would have to put up a sacred barrier within the village! And if that hadn’t proven Satoru correct in his verdict that something terrible had gone wrong, the giant crater that used to be Pinewind certainly did, a tree…the only remaining thing of Shun’s house located in the middle of the damage.

He could only hope Shun had in fact been transferred and therefore was safe, but something weighed on him. In the end he was left with more questions than when he started this excursion and they still had no idea where their friend had gone. He comforted Saki and told her they would begin anew tomorrow, since it had been getting dark and if what Shun said was true, they really shouldn’t be sneaking around after dark. He went home…

And when he woke up…

Aonuma Shun, was no longer in his memories.

It wasn’t that he surprised the memories himself, but that when he learned he had died well, like everyone else in the village they were stolen. To protect the peace they erased Shun from existence, but they couldn’t completely erase his memory. After all Shun had been with them for so very long. For those memories deeply ingrained within the children they attempted to replace Shun with another boy from Team 2, as well as insert these memories into him. But this only confused Satoru. He knew he never liked this boy, and that something was just… messed up. Who the hell was this guy? Why did he like him? He wasn’t the man he loved but his mind told him he was. When Saki voiced the same concerns he finally realized what had happened and he was able to calm down. He still didn’t remember who X was, but at least he knew there was a chance of finding out in the future. And he wanted to find out, he wanted to know what happened. So again they went back to that crater, and managed to convince Mamoru and Maria of the same fact. Their friend wasn’t really their friend, and that their real friend…was likely gone forever.

But he wouldn’t be the last to go missing. That same day Saki, Satoru, and Maria where taken before the ethics committee upon his grandmothers orders. It was then that Satoru and the others would be told that the very person they had been fearing had in fact been Asahina Tomiko, Satoru’s own grandmother and the most influential person to the entire village. He wasn’t allowed to speak to his grandmother, who wished instead to talk to Saki directly, but instead spoke to her people. After this they would all be sent home and for a few days they would go on with their lives once again.

This was until Maria and Saki came to school with dire news. Another of their friends had gone missing, this time it was Mamoru who they would spend their days searching for. But the reason behind his disappearance wasn’t a secret like Shun’s, and they were quick to act. Mamoru had left a note for his father telling them that he was leaving and to not worry about him. He ran away from the village in fear of his life, having found out that he was the next target for the trickster cats. As soon as they could leave they did and searched high and low for any sign of their friend.

Luckily it was the dead of winter and had yet to snow since he took off and they were able to find sled tracks. They followed them diligently until they reached a cave where they noticed that monster rat tracks had joined those of the sled. Quickly they went forward, pushing themselves along with their power until they reached a cliff where they found out Mamoru had slipped off and fell into the snow pile beneath. Still they didn’t give up hope, they found no body, but instead a new path. This one showed clear signs that Mamoru was in fact alive and was being dragged along by the monster rat.

Eventually they came to a small shack where they met their friend and he told him his story. The monster rat whom Saki had saved from the river when they were kids was the very same monster rat who saved Mamoru in turn. They stayed with them both and contemplated what they should do. Finally Satoru decided one of them had to go back and he took up this duty, planning to make up an excuse for why they had gone missing. He never came back, having been caught by the education committee and questioned. He told the truth in fear of what they would do if they caught on that he was lying and waited for the others. Eventually he was let out and ran into Saki who had followed him shortly later. They were given a mission by his grandmother to bring Mamoru and Maria back to the village and she would assure them their safety.

They went back to the shack only to find it gone, buried deeply by the use of power. They figured that their friends must have decided to run off together and hid their tracks. They would have to ask around, first they needed to find that monster rat. So they headed to the colony they knew the best, the robber fly colony and once again met with Squela. He told them of the hive where said monster rat lives and they all agreed to go their tomorrow. But if not for their necessity it’s highly likely they would have left. The robber fly colony had changed drastically since they had last been there. Squela was given a new name and the colony strived with occupants. It seems they combined with many of the other nearby colonies and created a new system of rule. They took the queens out of power and performed a kind of lobotomy on them to stop their dangerous impulses and instead created a council whose representatives would be decided by the people. They also created a cement factory and created their main building out of it. Their armor and weapons where now made of metal and had a sophisticated design, and their solders where brave and well trained.

They had come so far in under two years that it left them feeling uneasy. And Satoru stated that it was like they were getting ready for a war with the humans, like they wanted to be human. The truth was, they were once human, and they had somehow gotten a hold of this ancient technology, perhaps from capturing another demon minishiro. The point was, they didn’t trust the robber fly colony anymore and they would be leaving as soon as they could. They were forced to break into the mountain hive of the monster rat they had been searching out to question and instead of answers to their friend’s location they got a letter. This letter was from Maria, written to Saki but basically stated that they could no longer live in such a village and that although she would miss them she had to stay with Mamoru. She asked them to report that they were dead. And spread this request to the monster rats involved and then left, not for home but to keep searching until they really were out of time.

They would not find their friends, but they still had each other. That last night they cried together, and comforted one another the best way they knew how.

And then he woke up here.

Personality Description: Satoru Asahina was raised in Kaimisu 66 since he was born. Being the grandson of the leader of the ethics committee it was no wonder that as a child he tended to know, and follow every rule set down upon them. Because of this he would often make himself the deciding factor in games and the like, choosing the most appropriate path in order to make everyone happy. This is the beginning signs of the real Satoru and what one must look at throughout his growth to distinguish what he says just to make people happy and hopeful from what he’s really thinking and feeling at the time.

The truth of the matter is that Satoru is rather pessimistic. But he’s seen often in the anime supporting Saki and the others, telling them everything is going to be okay and they’re fine. But he says this even when in his own mind he’s already convinced that they are not fine. This need to be the strength of the group stems as early as when he’s 12 and shows clearly during summer camp. He knew as soon as they were caught by the priest that they would be killed for breaking the rules. He brings this up a few times with Saki, warning her and alerting her to the real danger they were in even if they had found safety with a human liking clan of monster rats. But during those moments of high stress he would keep it to himself, and even when attacked his first words wasn’t stemmed from the fear of being killed but from worry for his friends. “I’m okay.” I’m alive, don’t anger them, and don’t put yourself at risk. In the novel the monster rats turn their attention to Satoru because he had been struggling against them trying to get to Saki when they were testing if she had the same ability as the priest. At this point neither of them did, their powers having been sealed and not yet returned to them. They were at the Earth Spider Colonies mercy, and still he told her everything would be okay and that they’ll find their other friends.

But in truth he was scared, and he wasn’t so sure of himself. This came out when Saki and him where locked up together and he acted as he had learned to behave when a large amount of stress or conflict struck them. He tried to make moves on Saki, planning to sleep with her but she ends up rejecting him. She never tells him the real reason why but instead notices the guard staring at them. Satoru decides to blame this guard and suddenly his strength crumbles into rage as all those emotions transform into anger and he decides to kill him. This was huge for a child brought up and genetically manipulated to avoid hostility, in their area even the bugs are completely harmless to humans. But his plan works, and this marks the first time in his entire life that Satoru has ever killed ANYTHING. It shocks him for a moment but it also changes something in him, because he has now realized he can kill these things without repercussion and all that resentment and fear twisted into a need to protect themselves through any means. And when he’s given his power back it gives rise to a desire to end them all. “Power is not for defense, if we run they will shoot us in the back, we have to fight.”

But it doesn’t overshadow his need to protect his friends. He tells Saki to go and hide while he takes care of them, but she refuses and fallows him anyway. It’s a good thing she did because she notices his change in personality and puts a stop to it. But this marks a turning point for Satoru. Before this he was a brat, he picked on his friends and told stories to freak them out. He didn’t care if his words hurt anyone nor did he take responsibility for his actions. He was selfish in a way and he thought he was god. But he learned a new respect for life and just how weak they really where after everything was said and done.

His first sign of respect for life appeared when he saved Kiroumaru with what was left of his energy, despite knowing this creature would likely be ordered to kill them. And he was, but with this incident he also assured said monster rat’s eternal loyalty which will pay him back in the far future. Satoru’s darker side that came out after his first kill never fully went away but only shows itself when he’s in danger. He has no problem with eliminating any non-human enemies, and with his original abilities sealed he’ll likely have less of a problem killing humans then the rest from his world. But for the most part he tries to avoid conflict, only wishing to survive in this town that seemed against them since they hit puberty. He wouldn’t understand why until much later when he learns it was because he and his friends where granted the rare ability of free will. They could think as they like, and act accordingly to those thoughts. This was all an experiment to see if their fear wasn’t just hysteria, and certainly with what happened later to Shun it seemed they were on the right track. After this incident things became a lot harder for Satoru and his remaining friends. Every movement was watched and recorded and if they even got a hint of them going off the path they would be attacked. This became all the more real when they target Mamoru of all people, the one child who would have been happier without his free will. Still Satoru wasn’t discouraged, he stood up brave and faced whatever came his way. When Shun disappeared he easily shrugged off the others warnings and went looking for him even if it meant going alone. This encouraged the rest to follow him, and he likely would have continued his search forever if he and Saki had never seen the state of Pinewind.

Satoru is not dumb, and he rarely lets his emotions cloud his thinking, this is both a blessing and a curse. It means as a fighter he is capable of dealing with any loss and stressful situation that comes his way. But as a kid who really needs some hope that his boyfriend was going to be okay, that they could all go back to how things where, well that was dashed when he spotted that crater. He didn’t say a word about it though, because he knew Saki was still clinging on and he wasn’t about to discourage it. He loved Shun with all his heart. As kids they had been rivals, and when they entered the unified class they began to hang out and talk more. Before he knew it Satoru looked at Shun not as a rival, nor as a friend, but a lover. However a lover in their civilization is a bit different than ours. It would be more accurate to state that Shun is his best friend, the person he trusts the most and the one who he’ll lean on when he’s upset. All of this also comes alongside their societys way of easing stress which is intercourse. For Saki her lover was Maria but the person she would likely marry and have children with would be Shun. For Satoru his lover is Shun, but the person he desired to marry, and would marry, is Saki. I say this so you can understand that he really wished he could keep hoping, that’s why he agrees to continue the search tomorrow, but drops it that night.

But he would never see Shun again, in life or in his memories. And that he found absolutely unforgivable. It was something both he and Saki feared after Mamoru and Maria had run away, and they agreed that they too would leave the village if they dared to pull another stunt like that. This means a lot when Satoru very well knows that if he were to run away he would have not just their village, but every colony, and every village he came across afterwards against him. He would be sure to die, but that was a risk he was willing to take so long as he can keep his friends close to his heart. It was done so that the weak could hang on, to not become upset, but for those who could not completely forget their friend well, it was even more upsetting then knowing he was gone. Because they couldn’t be sure, and he would spend years like this.

Still he never lets any of their loss stop him. He is not the weakest nor the strongest in their group, and he long grew out of being the leader. Saki was strong, she could keep her cool in any situation despite how much she cared about them all. Satoru already showed that he couldn’t, he could be corrupted and he had very little caution for his own life. If it meant saving Saki he would easily sacrifice himself for her. This was his major fault, he often tended to take on an impossible task while trying to keep people away for their own safety. But his strength is attached to this. He is a strong force, and even after everything that happened he grew and learned from it all. Often Saki would lean on Satoru for support, and he would gladly give it to her, to Maria, to anyone in need. Satoru is intelligent, having studied hard after the incident and becoming recognized by the strongest power user in their region. He would later take in all that information from the demon minoshiro and rather than reject it like some had, he chose to find his own answers to the questions that never got answered. This would make him an intellect in his future and be presented the job of a researcher.

He is still rather energetic and obedient to a point. But he is loyal to those he calls his friends and although his youth leaves him open to being used, he isn’t dumb enough to not recognize he’s being fooled. Satoru and his experiences left him an adult in a child’s body.

[The video feed turns on, and blinking into the screen is a young boy with wine colored eyes and sandy blonde hair. He seems more then curious about the machine in his hand and he’s touching it with as little pressure as possible, afraid of doing something wrong.]

I read about these things called computers and tablets that existed in the past, never thought I’d wake up with one in my lap.

[He moves the screen away and smiles to his…audience? Was anyone even watching this? At this angle you can tell that he’s wearing the outfit provided by the lab. Yeah they kind of grabbed him away at an awkward moment.]

This place isn’t like anything I read in a history book, but considering most of it was erased that’s not really a surprise. Does anyone else here have the power of PK?

[Wait…maybe they don’t know what that is, or maybe they call it something different]

Uh… hold on.

[He places the device down and then lifts it up with…..what appears to be nothing, the device is moving on its own.]

This.

[He then moves an arm out and a nearby ball shoots into his hand with ease, he then throws it up and it continues to circle around him all with very little effort on his part. But this new world did have him rather nervous, and when he takes his eyes momentarily away from the device, it falls and the feed suddenly stops.]
